Our Alumni Association
The plan to form the SSEAYP (Ship for the Southeast Asian Youth Programme) Alumni Association in Brunei Darussalam had been in the pipeline since 1984 after the return of seven young Bruneians who were sent by the Brunei Government to participate for the first time in the 11th Programme as observers. Their participation was at the invitation of the Japanese Government.
However, it was decided that the plan was not feasible until Brunei Darussalam had taken part in the programme fully the following year. The government then sent a full contingent of 35 youths to join 210 young people from the other five ASEAN nations and Japan in the 1985 Programme that paved the way for the formation of the temporary SSEAYP Alumni of Brunei Darussalam. The temporary alumni was further strengthened with the addition of 35 more ex Participating Youth from the 1986 batch who represented the country in the 13th SSEAYP Programme.
The name BERSATU was voted as the most suitable for the association. The word BERSATU is appropriately chosen as a reminder of the Malay proverb. “bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh”, which means United we stand, divided we fall.
BERSATU was officially launched on the 28th June 1987, at Bandar Seri Begawan in conjunction with the official opening of the first annual general meeting.

Who We Are?
The emergence of BERSATU greatly signifies the dynamic spirit of Brunei Darussalam ex-participating youth (ex-PYs), though small in number compared to other SSEAYP Alumnus, in their true aim of fulfilling the SSEAYP Objective of strengthening existing friendships with their young contemporaries in the other nine ASEAN countries and Japan.
BERSATU hopes that it can instil national awareness among its member to contribute to the social and economic well being of the nation.
BERSATU also symbolizes the ex-PYs’ strong commitment in fostering international understanding with their counterparts in ASEAN and Japan in particular and youths of other nations in the world community in general.
