18th SSEAYP International General Assembly 2006 in Brunei Darussalam
For the 3rd time the SSEAYP International of Brunei Darussalam "BERSATU" as been honoured to host the 18th SSEAYP International General Assembly or SIGA in 2006. As one of the major event, SIGA was organized in rotation by the respective alumni association as the host country with the main purpose to promote continuous friendship and cooperation amongst the ex-participants of the SSEAYP programme. Since the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) was initiated in 1974, the programme has produced more than 7,000 ex-participants throughout the ASEAN countries and Japan. Our anticipation that the 18th SIGA in Brunei Darussalam will inspire towards peace in the region and unity amongst all the ex-participants.
The 18th SIGA Brunei Darussalam 2006 was officially opened on 29 April 2006 at The Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong. Present as the guest of honour at event was the then Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud.
The Opening Ceremony commenced with a welcoming address from the Chairman of the main organising committee, Mr Ahanapi bin Haji Mahadi (President of SSEAYP International Brunei). This was followed by a speech by the Secretary General of SSEAYP International, Ms Tomoko Okawara, and an address by the Minister of State of Youth Affairs and Measures for Declining Birthrate, Japan as well as an opening speech by the guest of honour. In the guest of honour's speech , he mentioned that the assembly has been, and still is an integral part of the SSEAYP International calendar of activities. It has provided former participants of SSEAYP with a continuous network and platform where they are able to rekindle existing friendship that have been built over the years as well as to promote and strengthen cooperation and information exchange among the members of the Alumni Associations. The event concluded with a prize presentation of BERSATU Awards as well as a viewing of art and photography exhibitions.
